Buildings brought back into use by Hastings Commons (click to enlarge)
We’re heading to Hastings to see one of the UK’s most inspiring examples of community-led regeneration. Hastings Commons has transformed the White Rock area — one of the most deprived parts of England — through a pioneering, DIY-style approach that puts local people in control.
Since 2014, Hastings Commons has brought over 9,000 square metres across 11 derelict buildings into community custody, creating spaces for living, working, learning and culture — all while actively resisting the displacement pressures of gentrification.
We’ll be joined by Dr Jess Steele OBE, CEO and Commoner-at-Large, whose thirty years of experience as a community activist, entrepreneur and national leader have shaped this extraordinary project. From heritage buildings to social spaces, Hastings Commons shows how reuse can regenerate places and strengthen communities.
Join us to explore what happens when local people take charge of their buildings — and what lessons it holds for towns and cities everywhere.
