Reciprocal Risks: The Two-Way Climate Challenge for the Built Environment

  • Deloitte 100 Cathedral Approach Salford, England, M3 7FB United Kingdom (map)

We are delighted to be involved in the next session of Manchester Climate Ready’s Built Environment Challenge; a network dedicated to decarbonising our city centre and accelerating our journey to net zero.

This initiative is led by Manchester Climate Ready, supported by their partners Civic, SimpsonHaugh and Deloitte.

In collaboration with Don’t Waste Buildings, this discussion will bring leaders together to address the dual challenge facing the UK: a built environment that remains a major driver of carbon emissions, and a rapidly changing climate that is already testing the resilience of our buildings, infrastructure, and natural systems.

We will explore how the reuse of existing buildings can deliver positive community outcomes, including new housing and the regeneration of town centres. These discussions will highlight the strategic shifts needed to create climate ready, resilient and equitable places.

Chaired by Lauren Teague of ING Media and Don't Waste Buildings North West Chapter Lead, panellists currently confirmed include:

Don’t Waste Buildings is a national campaign demonstrating the social, economic and environmental value of reusing existing buildings, and making it easier and more attractive for communities, developers and councils to choose retrofit over demolition. We are calling for the removal of financial disincentives, especially the VAT imbalance between new-build and reuse and for clear, consistent policy so that reusing buildings becomes the obvious, default choice across the UK.
