When it came time to refurbish Master Builders Victoria’s Collaboration and Innovation Centre in East Melbourne, MBAV saw an opportunity to do more than simply upgrade an existing facility. The project reimagines the building as an industry-leading benchmark for adaptive reuse, material circularity and considered retrofit, demonstrating how existing assets can be renewed with purpose rather than replaced. As a working training and collaboration centre, it provides a practical example of how the building sector can align innovation with stewardship—reducing waste, preserving embodied value and extending the life of valuable built fabric.
The refurbishment involved a comprehensive upgrade of the training areas including targeted structural demolition and reconfiguration, considered façade interventions, and full electrification of central plant. Each intervention was assessed through the lens of embodied carbon, material circularity, occupant comfort and operational efficiency, ensuring the renewed centre performs more effectively while making better use of the value already embedded within the existing building.
Join us for a tour of this newly refurbished building followed by light refreshments.
